All week, the Toledo Bend crowd has been amazing for the St. Croix Bassmaster Open and to start Championship Saturday, that is no different.
12 boats have gathered to watch leader Ben Milliken attempt to claim his first Opens victory and maybe make a little bit of history in the process.
Milliken needs 24-7 to break the all-time winning weight for an Opens victor. The current record is held by Gerald Swindle, a record he set at Kissimmee Chain with an 80-13 winning weight in 2011.
The Texan is on a good pace currently. He already has two bass in the boat that were logged as a 3-8 and a 2-0 on BassTrakk. A limit of any kind will likely secure the victory and several bigger bass will have him close to the record.
Milliken has started the morning on the same set of points he did yesterday. Yesterday after he brought his 26-pound, 15-ounce bag to the scales, he mentioned most of his bass have come in 6 feet of water or less.
He’s spent a decent amount of time so far chucking a Carolina rig but has mixed in a glide bait and swimbait.
He also has one deep hole where he moved to catch his second place today as well as several more the day before.
Conditions have changed every day. Yesterday it was bright and sunny while this morning has brought thick clouds and spitting rain with heavier storms to the south.
Storms are predicted this afternoon, but not until after weigh-in is scheduled to start at 2:45 p.m. CT.
