LAVALETTE, W.V. — The Wayne Pioneers Bass Fishing Team conducted a community service project by cleaning up a local lake March 16.
Thirteen members of the West Virginia B.A.S.S. Nation high school club participated in the Beech Fork Lake Spring Cleanup, which was the first time the club had done a cleanup at the local lake. “We have done cleanups before at another local lake, East Lynn Lake,” said Cameron Tanner, the club’s advisor and a teacher at Wayne High School.
The club switched lakes for its community service project this year when Justin Pyles, a maintenance worker at Beech Fork Lake, invited the club to participate in the Beech Fork Lake Spring Cleanup. The annual cleanup is coordinated by the Friends of Beech Fork Lake and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The bass team and Wayne High School JROTC members spent three hours collecting all sorts of trash along the shoreline of the drawn down lake. “It’s amazing the amount of trash there is when the lakes are down,” Tanner said.
The club members picked up trash while walking along the bank and from a flat pontoon boat provided by the Corps of Engineers. Club members who volunteered for the cleanup project were Dylan Preston, Michael Prario, Avery Walters, Kolby Stiltner, Cole Kiley, Tyler Maynard, Chase Jackson, Sam Wolfe, Jamison Osborne, Jamison Maynard, Jonah Mathis, Ashley Marshall and Autumn Adams.
