CULLMAN, Ala. — Cullman High School bass fishing team members will have the opportunity to learn more about their sport through a special class set up by their school.
School administrators decided to set up a bass fishing class for Kyle Morris, a physical science and biology teacher who had an open period during the spring semester. Morris is the bass fishing team coach, and he was also on the bass fishing team himself at University of Alabama.
“My assistant principal called me in and said we were going to have to do something for a seventh-period class and asked me if I would be interested in having the fishing kids in my class,” said Morris.
The elective class was set up for the final hour of school on alternating days. “I am just really blessed to have an administration that supports me,” Morris said. “They treat fishing with the respect that they treat basketball, football and everything else.”
The bass class is open to all of Morris’ fishing team members who have already taken their required elective courses. Morris’ goal for the class is to educate his students on the fundamentals of bass fishing and the principles of conservation. He also intends to give them time on the water by holding practice sessions on Smith, Guntersville and Wheeler lakes.
The class will also feature lessons on professionalism and business savvy to help the students prepare for their future careers.
