It’s cold. Water temperatures are in the mid-40s on your favorite midland reservoir, and the water is down — way down. At full pool, the lake has an average depth of around 40 feet, but it’s down 30 feet or so for the winter drawdown. Cover is hard to find. There’s no grass, no timber and no shoreline cover. What you have in abundance is rock, slate and some clay. The banks are mostly steep, and there’s 3 or 4 feet of visibility all around the lake. As for the bass, you have both largemouth and smallmouth, and they’re feeding on threadfin and gizzard shad. Where to begin?
