What is it?
Lew’s Tournament MG baitcaster.
What does it do?
The Tournament MG is designed to be one of the best crankbait reels on the market. However, don’t pigeon-hole them as strictly a cranking reel, a 7.1:1 ratio is available.
Why do I need it?
A reel like this would be ideal for throwing anything from 1/4-ounce square bills to 1-ounce lipless crankbaits.
How do I use it?
Three different speeds are available, 5.4:1, 6.4:1 and 7.1:1. The slower ones are better for throwing big, deep-diving crankbaits and the faster speed is best for ripping lipless crankbaits through grass and cover. The low ratio is good for deep-divers because the long lip requires more effort on the part of the angler, and the extra torque provided by the slower ratio offers just that.
What sets it apart?
The MG stands for magnetic cast control, which is controlled by a dial on the outside of the housing. Also included on the housing is a lube port for easy maintenance. The handle is longer than most handles, which Lew’s says is better for cranking power. Each reel in the line has 10 ball bearings.
How much?
Lew’s lists the retail price for the MG at $129.99.
