Gear Review: Maui Jim Big Wave

What is it?

Maui Jim Big Wave

What sets it apart?

Based on the strength of its patented PolarizedPlus lens technology, Maui Jim’s Big Wave glasses take eye protection and view enhancement to the next level. Having earned the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation as an effective UV filter for the eyes and surrounding face, these lenses eliminate 99.9 percent of glare and block 100 percent of harmful UV. The Big Wave’s lenses are made of MauiPure — a lightweight material that combines crisp optics with scratch and shatter resistance.

How do I use it?

Built with a thin, lightweight Grilamid frame designed for longer wear time, the Big Wave features a Saddle-style bridge with adjustable nose pads for added comfort. Style options include a Black Matte frame with Neutral Grey lenses (highest available light reduction for the richest colors and sharpest contrast), Translucent Matte Grey frame with Blue Hawaii lense (stylish blue mirror coating with Maui Jim’s signature color enhancement and clarity) and Olive Tortoise frame with HCL Bronze lens (versatile in changing conditions with a warm tint).

Angler’s insight:

Beyond that very important protective stuff, I’m liking the Big Wave style for a couple of reasons. First, they’re made wide, so they fit my big head well. Also, while this style is not touted as being designed to fit over regular prescription glasses, there’s plenty of space to slip these over the Rx glasses I need for distance. Yes, I know we can get polarized Rx glasses pretty easily, but there are times — like shooting pictures with a polarizing lens filter — when it’s handy to just wear my street glasses and fit a pair of spacious sunglasses over them between shooting sessions. The Big Wave style fits the bill here.
