Gear Review: Columbia Terminal Outdry Jacket

What is it?

Columbia Terminal Outdry Jacket

What sets it apart?

Boasting a waterproof, breathable system may not be so novel, but Columbia took an interesting approach to this jacket’s design. Typically, this type of garment finds a breathable membrane laminated onto a textile treated with a chemical that keeps the water beading off the jacket so it does not absorb into the textile. When this treatment wears off through abrasion, staining, etc., the textile starts absorbing water and prevents the garment from breathing because moisture within the system doesn’t move to a textile that’s wetted out. Columbia has fixed this issue with a breathable membrane on the outside and a moisture-wicking technology on the inside.

How do I use it?

The Terminal Outdry Jacket allows the user to customize their fit with a fully adjustable hood, waist, sleeves and watertight comfort cuffs. With Columbia’s OutDry Extreme and Omni-Tech technologies ensuring waterproof/breathable comfort, this jacket is fully seam sealed and includes reflective detail for low-light safety. Adding the hook-and-loop rod holder tab above the chest pocket was a nice touch. Available in sizes XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL, the jacket comes in one of three unique cammo patterns — Black Digi Scale and Vivid Blue Digi Scale

Angler’s insight:

We’ve all felt it — that damp feeling inside a jacket that’s supposed to be keeping us dry. Water intrusion is one possible culprit, but perspiration is equally common when we’re tucked within a non-breathable material. Looks like Columbia invested some serious analysis into the Terminal Outdry Jacket’s moisture-handling performance and came up with something that’ll remove a nagging distraction so you can focus on fishing.
