Gear Review: Abu Garcia Ultra Long Cast Revo EXD

What is it?

Abu Garcia Ultra Long Cast Revo EXD

What sets it apart?

Continuing its development of lightweight, low-profile reels, Abu Garcia has introduced a model created for maximum casting capability, regardless of what an angler’s throwing. Weighing 6.7 ounces, the Revo EXD includes 11 high-performance bearings — two custom EXD bearings on the spool shaft, eight stainless steel High Performance Corrosion Resistant (HPCR) bearings, plus one roller bearing. The reel’s extremely lightweight machined EXD finesse spool provides low start-up inertia — especially helpful when casting lighter baits — and a Power Stack Carbon Matrix drag system creating 20 pounds of smooth, consistent pressure will stop whatever bites.

How do I use it?

Available in right- and left-hand models in 5.4:1 and 8.0:1 gear ratios, the Revo EXD includes a durable carbon fiber handle with EVA foam grips. An X-Cräftic alloy frame offers increased corrosion resistance, while C6 Carbon Side plates significantly reduce weight without sacrificing strength and durability. The Revo EXD’s Ti coated line guide reduces friction and improves durability, while the Duragear brass gear extends gear life and a DuraClutch Design improves engagement and durability.

Angler’s insight:

It’s hard to overstate the value of optimized casting distance, whether that’s reaching wary fish that spook from the boat or airing out your spool to make that crankbait reach its maximum depth. A cool feature is Abu Garcia’s inclusion of two spools with each Revo EXD. A deep spool accommodates larger baits like full-size topwaters, while the shallow spool is intended for lighter finesse baits. The latter can be challenging to throw on a baitcaster, but the shallow spool facilitates the process.
