The Yakima SkyRise is a rooftop tent that fits a wide variety of vehicles. You can choose your capacity from a two-person to a three-person tent. It is made of lightweight, breathable, waterproof and durable materials to make your camping experience comfortable no matter the weather. It comes with a 2.5-inch memory-foam mattress inside so you no longer need to pack a sleeping pad. Just toss your sleeping bag and pillow in and you are ready for a great night’s sleep.
How do I use it?
First, your vehicle and rack system must have a minimum load-carrying capacity of 165 pounds. Once you have the correct roof rack system, installation is quick and easy when using Yakima’s instruction manual. Once your tent is secured to your roof, setup and teardown at camp will take less than 10 minutes. It comes with everything you need, including a sturdy ladder to get into the tent. The 2.5-inch memory-foam mattress stays in the tent all the time but does come with a washable cover, so once you are set up, you can go to bed immediately. It can stay on your vehicle year-round because of its protective and durable cover.

There are many options out there for rooftop tents. The Yakima option is on the cheaper end of the spectrum but quality-wise is not lacking. We leave it on our vehicle from May through November each year and have yet to see any wear and tear to the outer cover. We love being able to arrive at camp and be set up within minutes. I do recommend practicing setup and teardown a couple of times at home before your first trip. We were initially skeptical about the comfort of the built-in mattress but were pleasantly surprised. We have camped in extreme heat, extreme cold, snow, wind and rain and have yet to be concerned about the durability of this tent. There are windows on every side with built-in mesh screens, so you can maximize or minimize air flow as needed and wake up to panoramic views. Getting in and out of the tent does require using a ladder. The ladder is strong and comfortably wide. Another option is entering through the front tent window via the hood of your car, which may be an easier option if you have children or dogs. We have the three-person model and have slept comfortably with two people and three dogs. We get a lot of questions about getting our dogs up into the tent. We taught one of our dogs to climb the ladder to get in, and we use a harness with a handle to provide guidance and help getting down. I highly recommend this product if you are looking to get off the ground and improve your sleep while camping.
