Gear review: Bajío Sunglasses

What is it?

The innovative new company that won the best of eyewear award at ICAST 2022 for their Roca frames has introduced three models — Piedra, Vega and Palometa — with a couple of low-light lenses (rose and violet) that are particularly relevant for fall/winter, when sun angles become increasingly lower. Blocking 95% of blue light up to 445 nanometers (wavelength), Bajío’s proprietary lens technology protects the eyes, improves lens clarity, reduces blur/glare/haze and enhances color.

What sets it apart?

These models boast cool features and stylings, but the underlying Bajío story makes them even more engaging. From frames made of recycled materials, to eco-friendly packaging and a hemp drawstring bag, the company’s commitment to sustainability resonates with folks who enjoy the outdoors.

How do I use it?

The new Bajío models feature a dual-purpose element: vented rubber side shields to block peripheral sunlight and also allow airflow to keep the angler cool. Light-shielding sun ledges on the top, bottom and sides of the frames further protect the eyes, while ergonomically textured, vented rubber nose pads and temple tips ensure a comfortable fit. Built with wide, adjustable temples, these frames include internal flex hinges and keeper holes for cables.

How much?

$199 (polycarbonate), $249 (glass)

Angler’s insight:

Right out of the box, Bajío glasses exude something special — an attention to detail that contains a well conceived product in equally well conceived packaging. Boxes made of recycled paper and sealed with 100% biodegradable tape include an envelope full of recycled care cards and instructions printed with natural, algae-based ink. I think the most impressive element of Bajío’s efforts is the sturdy snap-closed case made of sustainable cactus leather, which requires no irrigation and dries with solar energy. Inside the case, a piece of cactus leather riveted to the bottom provides nose bridge support and bespeaks intentionality.
