The assumption is fair: The reigning Classic Champion enters the current year’s event with a well-earned swagger.
Jason Christie’s no exception and he’s been clear about the incredible sense of satisfaction his 2022 victory on Lake Hartwell brought. He’s never lacked confidence, but lifting the sport’s most coveted award takes that self-belief to a new level.
Confidence and the mental momentum it brings undoubtedly benefit an angler’s performance. But entering his ninth Classic, Christie’s clearing the board and approaching this event as one of 55 competitors with their eyes on the prize.
“It feels like a year ago since I won, all of the craziness; but the fishing — that feels like it was yesterday,” Christie said. “Starting Day 1, the status of winning the Classic is gone. I want to forget about that (2022) trophy.
“I have just as much chance and just as much right as these other guys here to win the trophy we’re fishing for here. I’m pretending that I’ve never won, just so it motivates me more to try to get another trophy.”
